Well we survived the two day trip in the car! Our daughter was such a good traveler. We purchased a small DVD player for the car which really helped us on the long trip. She enjoys watching Baby Einstein videos. My father flew down to Georgia to help us on the drive back. We had [...]

Roughly 150 lieutenants from class 06-09 graduated the Infantry Basic Officer Leader Course today at Freedom Hall on Lawson Army Airfield after 13 weeks of rigorous training on infantry tactics and doctrine. In the next two weeks, most of these officers will immediately move over to the Army’s premier leadership course, also known as Ranger [...]

Georgia must be infested with these things. Tonight we came back from getting ice cream and found this black widow outside our door. This one looks like it might be a brown widow, which one author suggests is twice as venomous as a black widow. Any spider experts out there?

I recently picked up a pair of the new Nike Special Forces Boot for wear during IBOLC. Based on the popular Nike “Free” sole, the Nike website describes the boot in glowing terms:
A 21st century boot for high-speed operators, the lightweight Nike SFB Men’s Boot was engineered to the specifications and needs of Special Forces [...]

We’re half-way through “Leader Forge”, the culminating training event of IBOLC where we run nearly continuous operations out of a combat outpost. The first phase consisted mainly of clearing operations, driving insurgents out of our AO (area of operations) and providing security to the local populace. The next two phases of our operation will focus [...]

On Wednesday night of this past week I headed to Ft. Benning for a senior spouses social. The theme of the evening was a “Night In Italy” so we enjoyed little finger foods and desserts. The main purpose of the evening was for the Lieutenant’s wives to get a chance to meet and talk with [...]

I recently read and reviewed SSG David Bellavia’s account of the battle for Fallujah in 2004 titled “House To House” for IBOLC. My review is below.
House to House, by Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, recounts the harrowing urban conflict of Fallujah in 2004 as he and his squad clear homes of insurgents in Iraq. Wrapped into [...]
COIN

I’m enjoying time back in garrison this week as we study Counter-Insurgency (COIN) doctrine and defensive operations. Monday, a high-ranking officer from the Combined Arms directorate took time to speak to us regarding COIN and introduced us to a new Army field manual which he helped write and is being fielded and digested by the [...]
